Course Overview

Course | Infant Nutrition Education

Infant Nutrition Education is an online accredited Continuing Professional Development (CPD) program that aims to support primary care physicians and healthcare professionals (HCPs) in the best practice management of early life nutrition. Participants will consolidate their understanding of the importance of the first 1000 days of life, functional gastrointestinal disorders, cow’s milk allergy and preterm infants.

  • Module 1 | Introduction to nutrition in the first 1,000 days

In this module you will gain a practical foundation of knowledge on the importance of nutrition in the first 1000 days of life, from conception to toddlerhood, and related considerations for the management of infant nutrition in UK primary care, with particular relevance for GPs, health visitors and other community practitioners.

This module provides a review of:

    • Nutrition during pregnancy
    • The importance of breastmilk and supporting breastfeeding
    • Infant growth and common feeding complications
    • Starting solids

After completing this module you will have acquired a practical understanding of the above topics, laying the foundation for in-depth exploration of the management of common infant gastrointestinal complaints, infant food allergy with a focus on cow’s milk allergy and preterm infant nutrition, in modules 2, 3 and 4 respectively.

  • Module 2 | Diagnosis and management of common gastrointestinal complaints in infants

In this module you will learn about the latest UK guidelines and recommendations for the diagnosis and management of common gastrointestinal (GI) complaints in infants, specifically common functional GI disorders such as reflux, colic and constipation, in a primary care setting. This module is of particular relevance to GPs but may also be of interest to health visitors and other community practitioners looking to extend their knowledge of this area.

This module provides a review of:

    • Overview of general symptoms of GI complaints in infants
    • Symptoms and diagnosis of functional GI disorders
    • Guidelines and approaches in the management of functional GI disorders, including parental support and education
    • Dietary management of functional GI disorders

After completing this module you will feel confident in diagnosing and managing common functional GI disorders such as reflux, colic and constipation in a primary care setting, as well as in providing parental education and reassurance during what can be a very distressing time for the family. You will also be familiar with the ‘red flag’ symptoms that may indicate a more serious GI disorder that should be referred to specialist care.

  • Module 3 | Diagnosis and management of food allergy in infants, with a focus on cow's milk allergy

In this module you will learn about the latest UK guidelines and recommendations for the diagnosis and management of food allergy in infants, with a focus on cow’s milk allergy. The module is of particular relevance to GPs but may also be of interest to health visitors and other community practitioners looking to extend their knowledge of this area.

This module provides a review of:

    • Symptoms and manifestations of infant food allergy
    • Guidelines for diagnosis and management of IgE-mediated cow’s milk allergy
    • Guidelines for diagnosis and management of non-IgE-mediated cow’s milk allergy
    • Practical advice and parental support, including supporting breastfeeding and the introduction of solids in infants with allergy

After completing this module you will have acquired a practical understanding of how infant food allergy typically manifests, and how to undertake an allergy-focused clinical history if food allergy is suspected.

You will feel confident in identifying symptoms of IgE- and non-IgE-mediated cow’s milk allergy, and in diagnosing and managing mild-to-moderate cow’s milk allergy in primary care using the latest guidelines. You will also be familiar with ‘red flag’ symptoms that may indicate a severe cow’s milk allergy and should be referred to secondary care.

  • Module 4 | Understanding the nutritional needs of the preterm infant

In this module you will gain an introduction to the very specific nutritional needs of the preterm infant, some of the main challenges involved in feeding preterm infants, the ESPGHAN guidelines and how to support the parents of a preterm infant.

This module is of particular relevance to healthcare professionals wanting to deepen their understanding of preterm nutrition.

This module provides a review of:

    • The first 1000 days in preterm infants
    • Nutritional needs of preterm infants and review of guidelines
    • Breastfeeding of preterm infants
    • Practical advice and parental support

After completing this module you will feel more confident in managing preterm infant feeding and growth. You will gain a better understanding of the ESPGHAN nutritional recommendations for preterm infants, the importance of using growth charts and how to provide parental support whilst in hospital and post-discharge.
